FAQ

Can I grow fruit trees in pots?

Yes! If you have limited space, fruit trees can be grown indoors. To prevent tree rot, make sure the pot has drainage holes. Also, ensure the pot is deep enough to hold the root ball. This will help prevent stress on the tree.

How do you prepare the soil for a vegetable garden?

Preparing soil is simple for a vegetable garden. First, you should remove all weeds around the area where you want to plant vegetables. You can then add organic matter, such as composted cow manure, leaves and grass clippings. Finally, water well and wait until plants sprout.

What month is best for starting a vegetable or fruit garden?

The best time to plant vegetables is from April through June. This is when the soil is warmest and plants grow fastest. If you live in colder climates, you might wait until July or Aug.

Do I have enough space to plant a vegetable or fruit garden in my backyard?

You might be wondering if you have enough space to grow a vegetable garden if you don't have one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It only takes some planning. For instance, raised beds could be constructed only 6 inches high. Or, you could use containers instead of raised beds. You will still have plenty of produce, regardless of which method you choose.

What is a planting plan?

A planting schedule is a list listing the dates when plants should be planted. The goal is to maximise growth while minimizing stress. Early spring crops like spinach, lettuce, and peas must be sow after the last frost date. Cucumbers, squash, and spring beans are later crops. Fall crops include potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and broccoli.

What vegetables can you grow together?

It is possible to grow tomatoes and peppers together, as they like the same soil conditions and temperatures. Both are great companions as tomatoes require heat to ripen, while peppers need cooler temperatures to achieve their best flavor. Start seeds indoors approximately six weeks prior to planting. After the weather has warmed up, you can transplant the pepper plants and tomatoes outside.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
