How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
