FAQ

How many hours of daylight does a plant really need?

It all depends on what kind of plant you have. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunshine per day. Some plants prefer 8 hours of direct sunlight. Most vegetables require 10 hours direct sunlight in a 24-hour period.

What is the difference between aquaponic gardening or hydroponic?

Hydroponic gardening uses nutrient-rich water instead of soil to feed plants. Aquaponics blends fish tanks with plants to create a self sufficient ecosystem. It's like having a farm right in your backyard.

Can I grow vegetables inside?

Yes, it is possible to grow vegetables in a greenhouse during winter. You will need to buy a greenhouse and grow lights. Make sure to check with local laws before doing this.

What month should I start a vegetable garden?

Planting vegetables in April and June is the best time. This is when the soil gets warmest, and plants tend to grow quickly. If you live outside of a warm climate, you might be better off waiting until July or August.

What is the minimum space required to grow vegetables?

One square foot of soil will require 1/2 pound of seeds. This is a good rule of thumb. You will need 100 pounds of seed if your area is 10 feet by 10 foot (3 meters by 3 metres).

Can I plant fruit trees in pots

Yes! If you have limited space, fruit trees can be grown indoors. Your pot should have drainage holes to ensure that the tree doesn't get rotted by excess moisture. Also ensure that the pot is large enough to accommodate the root ball. This will stop the tree becoming stressed.

What is a planting schedule?

A planting plan is a list of plants to be planted at different times each year. The goal is for plants to grow at their best while minimizing stress. For example, early spring crops like lettuce, spinach, and peas should be sown after the last frost date. Summer beans, squash, cucumbers and squash are all later spring crops. The fall crops include potatoes and carrots.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
