FAQ

Can I plant fruit trees in pots

Yes! Fruit trees can be grown in pots if you're short on space. Make sure your pot is drained to prevent the tree from getting rotted by excess moisture. You should also ensure that the pot is deep sufficient to support the root ball. This will protect the tree from being stressed.

What is a planting schedule?

A planting schedule is a list listing the dates when plants should be planted. The goal is for plants to grow at their best while minimizing stress. The last frost date should be used to sow early spring crops, such as spinach, lettuce, and beans. Later spring crops include cucumbers, squash, and summer beans. How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
