FAQ

How do I know what type of soil I have?

The dirt's color can tell you what it is. More organic matter is found in darker soils than in lighter soils. Another option is to test the soil. These tests measure the number of nutrients present in the soil.

Which vegetables are best to grow together?

It is possible to grow tomatoes and peppers together, as they like the same soil conditions and temperatures. They can complement each other because tomatoes require heat to mature, and peppers require lower temperatures for their optimal flavor. You can try planting them together by starting seeds indoors six weeks before transplanting them outdoors. Once the weather gets warmer, transplant your pepper and tomato plants outdoors.

What is the minimum space required to grow vegetables?

The rule of thumb is to use 1/2 pound seed per square foot. So if you have an area of 10 feet by 10 feet (3 meters by 3 meters), you'll need 100 pounds of seeds.

What length of time can I keep an indoor flower alive?

Indoor plants can survive for several years. It is vital to repot your plants every few months in order to encourage new growth. Repotting is simple. Just remove the old soil, and then add fresh compost.

Can I plant fruit trees in pots

Yes! If you have limited space, fruit trees can be grown indoors. You should make sure that your pot has drainage holes to keep excess moisture from rotting the tree. The pot should be deep enough to hold the rootball. This will protect the tree from being stressed.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
