FAQ

Which seeds should you start indoors?

The best seed for starting indoors is a tomato seed. Tomatoes are easy to grow, and they produce fruit all year round. When growing tomatoes in pots, be careful when transplanting them into the ground. Planting tomatoes too early can lead to soil drying out which could lead roots to rot. Also, be aware of diseases such as bacterial wilt, which can kill plants quickly.

What is the difference between hydroponic gardening and aquaponic gardening?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics combines fish tanks with plants to create a self-sufficient ecosystem. It's almost like having a farm right at home.

When should you plant flowers?

Planting flowers during springtime is best when temperatures are warm and the soil feels moist. Planting flowers should be done after the first frost if you live in a cold climate. The ideal temperature for indoor gardening is 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

How can I find out what type of soil my house has?

By looking at the dirt's color, you can tell. More organic matter is found in darker soils than in lighter soils. Another option is to test the soil. These tests can measure the soil's nutrients.

Can I grow fruit trees inside pots?

Yes! Yes, pots are possible to grow fruit trees if space is tight. To prevent tree rot, make sure the pot has drainage holes. You should also ensure that the pot is deep sufficient to support the root ball. This will prevent the tree from being stressed.

What is a plant calendar?

A planting calendar is a list of plants that should be planted at different times throughout the year. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. For example, early spring crops such as peas, spinach, and lettuce should be sown after the last frost date. Squash, cucumbers, and summer beans are some of the later spring crops. Fall crops include potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and broccoli.

When to plant herbs?

When the soil temperature is 55°F, herbs should be planted in spring. The best results are achieved when they are in full sunshine. Plant basil indoors by placing seedlings into pots containing potting mix. Keep them out of direct sun until they sprout leaves. Once the plants begin to grow properly, you should move them into bright indirect lights. After three weeks, you can transplant them to individual pots and water them every day.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
