How to Grow Vegetables and Herbs in Water

regrowing

It is possible to grow your own vegetables and save money. This method is inexpensive and only requires a few tablespoons of water, if you are smart and reuse the water from other sources. This method can also help you cut down on grocery costs as you don't need to purchase expensive produce. Regrowing vegetables can also make organic food more affordable, as they are made from leftovers.

You can regrow the same vegetable several times if you take a cutting. You can also regrow basil, cilantro and lettuce from the stems. To regrow, you may also plant a celery, ginger, or pineapple in water. Other herbs that can be regrowed from cuttings include leeks, garlic and lemongrass. You should not overcrowd the plant.

The easiest vegetables to re-grow from scraps are the green onions. They don't need a lot of care and taste great. Romaine lettuce is easier to regrow than other lettuce varieties. The middle of the romaine leaves has firm ribs. This makes it an excellent vegetable for regrowing. For salads, the greens can be made from celery and Fennel. Green onions can be regrown by simply removing the stems.

Other vegetables can be regrown by soaking them in water. Once they are large enough to withstand the water, simply transplant them into soil. While they may look smaller than their original counterparts, they will still taste good and have many uses. You can always go to the garden again next time you feel like a fresh green.

To re-grow ginger, use a bucket. A cement bucket works well. Four inches of potting clay should be poured into the bucket. Add the sprouted ginger to the bucket. Water regularly until sprouts appear. You can start re-growing ginger as soon as there are sprouts. This is a great way save money and to have fresh ginger on hand. Use an old bucket to grow ginger if your not sure.

Another great vegetable to re-grow is onions. Once the tops have been sliced, chop them into small pieces and store in a glass or two of water. You can then harvest the green portions of the plants once they have regrown. The green can be harvested again until production slows. It's as simple as that. Once you've harvested the green part, you can harvest the roots and leave the green tops to regrow.

Lemongrass can also be regrown. Lemongrass can be hard to find in the supermarket, but it can be easily regrowed using lemongrass roots. Simply place the root end in a bowl of water and leave it out in sunlight. Within a week, the root will be re-grown and you'll be able to harvest the leaves and stalks. Lemongrass is great for indoor and outdoor herb gardens.

How To

Basil growing tips

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. It's great for flavoring dishes, adding flavor to soups, sauces, salads, pasta, and even desserts. These are some helpful tips to help you grow basil indoors.

  1. Be careful about where you place it. Basil is an evergreen plant. If it's not located in the right area, it will only last one season. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers full sun. If you are growing it outside, choose a spot with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. Plant the seeds in small pots that are 1/2 inch deep. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination usually takes about ten days. Once they are germinated, transfer them to a protected area where the temperatures are at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. Transplant the seedlings into larger pots by removing the plastic wrap. Add potting mix to each container. As needed, add more potting mixture. Place the containers outside in direct light or in a sunny area. Mist the plants daily to prevent wilting.
  4. After the dangers of frost have passed, mulch the plants. This will keep them warm and prevent water loss.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil requires regular watering in order to thrive. A rain gauge can be used to measure how much water plants need. You can also use a timer for the irrigation system to be turned off during dry spells.
  6. Take your basil out at the peak of its life. Pick leaves frequently to encourage bushier growth.
  7. Use paper towels or screens to dry the leaves. Place the leaves in glass jars, bags or in the refrigerator.
